Hawking: Aliens may pose risks to Earth
Astrophysicist says extraterrestrials likely exist, but could be dangerous

LONDON - British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking says aliens are out there, but it could be too dangerous for humans to interact with extraterrestrial life.

Hawking claims in a new documentary that intelligent alien lifeforms almost certainly exist, but warns that communicating with them could be "too risky."

The 68-year-old scientist says a visit by extraterrestrials to Earth would be like Christopher Columbus arriving in the Americas, "which didn't turn out very well for the Native Americans."

Socialistic Democracy

Officials: U.S. plans major push into Kandahar
Marjah called a ‘prelude’ to offensive in Afghanistan's second largest city

***Why haven't we learned to stop announcing our invasions?
By the way guys, we'll be attacking your city at O800 hrs on thursday around noon......unless there is a sandstorm in that case we'll wait till friday morning.

ah blessed patriotism......how it keeps us all so quiet.
In the 40s we fought a war of necessity because we are humans like everyone else and we needed to fight to survive. we stood next to stalin on the german border and patted each other on the back for our ingenuity and joint resolve.
Maybe it's true if we don't take "the war" to the "terrorist's" doorstep we'll find them right here blowing up our schools and grocery stores. I say it's coming anyway. Terrorists are born and bred right here and in the future as technology catches up with rebellion we will see ever growing and ever deadly attacks pulled off on our soil and by our own people.

What is a terrorist and how do we define him? During the revolutionary war here in the Usa in 1776 the brits surely thought of us as terrorists. We've all been raised to look back on them as freedom fighters and the honored founding fathers of this grand empire of hot dogs and apple pie.
The first thing we did was oppress the native americans. like the Israeli nation we forgot that quick what oppression is like.

General Washington would have flown a cessna into the royal palace if he could have and maybe 200 years later we would have praised his effort. personally I love everything british and wish we would have kept more than we did.
When I read the "Stack manifesto" I couldn't help but agree with a large portion of what he was on about.
Is the Gov't corrupt? Isn't every Gov't corrupt?
Are we really a free people or are we slaves of the giant corporate industrial monster of unchecked capitalism?
The only mistake was flying a plane into a building. It made every word he wrote worthless.
And the man he killed by doing so didn't deserve to die for it. So his words will pass away and be lost in the endless throng of dissidence that's either raked over the hot coals of patriotism or swept under the wet carpet of media suppression.

In a country of patriots it's dangerous to voice an "against the grain" opinion or to voice agreement with someone else's. What they do is pull you out of line and focus the lens eye on you and make you recant your opinions for all to hear. And yes that sounds eerily like an inquisition to me.
we're a greedy nation of lynch mobs and witch hunters.
Of course by writing this I too become the target of the inquisition. That's ok, I'm ranxid and they expect it of me. I been on the "wrong" side of capitalist culture since I was a pup in high school. Yes I do agree with some socialist ideals and to bible belt america that makes me the evil red menace.
A menace who thinks no child should starve in america while fat aristocrats sit in the halls of congress belching panera bread in their crisp clothes dutifully ironed by their immigrant housemaids.
That a hospital should try and save the lives of all who enter regardless of their monetary status or that a 911 call shouldn't come with an attached bill meant to swell the pockets of state and city "officials"
That we should all be taxed according to how much we make from the lowest wage to the highest. It shouldn't be ' the more you make the less you pay"
A menace who thinks there just shouldn't be an "American royalty" class living high in their glass mansions built on the backs of the poor working class.
These greed filled and gout growing pseudo ceasers should not be allowed to take the food from my children's mouths. That was the true ideal this country was founded on....freedom from oppression.
Not the freedom of the all powerful dollar. Make all you can, grab as much as you can carry and step on the backs of children to get there.
We voted for change.
The words sounded good and I listened. truth is you can't get "real" change by endless discussions and filibustered cocktail parties. you need to stand strong at the helm and tell the crew we are turning to starboard. Without the strength of true leadership the crew pulls the ship in every direction.
I call what we need "socialistic democracy"
and I'm sure I'll be burned at the stake for saying it.

Someday in the future we will have no choice but to change and evolve our forms of Gov't to fit a dying planet with ever dwindling resources. The fanatic minds who cling to the "power at all cost" mentality will wither and die from their inability to accept that the world is changing. The survivors will be the ones who share their panera bread with the neighbor's kids.

Chiming in on the swine flu......

CDC: U.S. flu deaths likely as outbreak spreads - Swine flu- msnbc.com

At least seven people were in U.S. hospitals with swine flu as the number of cases nationwide rose to 68 on Tuesday and a federal health official warned that deaths were likely.
Most of the nation's confirmed cases were in New York City, where the health commissioner said "many hundreds" of schoolchildren were ill with what was "most likely swine flu." The city announced 45 confirmed cases, all affiliated with a Catholic high school.
Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noted that although ordinary human flu accounts for 36,000 deaths every year, he was concerned by this strain.

******OK It is true there is cause for some concern. Alarm should come when this virus turns into a super-spreader or mortality rates begin rising quickly....as I see it now a certain immunity is following this nasty bug along as can be seen here . My 88 yr old came home yesterday with dust masks.....
HERE is a neat video about a company more people should pay attention to......although I am not sure I classify this as a "disease outbreak"......36,ooo people die of flu every year.........36,ooo.........ok if that didn't sink in read this.......and then as a conclusion to tonight's post read this......its the only answer.

Gates: No change soon on `don't ask, don't tell'

-Don't expect any change soon to the "don't ask, don't tell" policy about gays in the military.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates says both he and President Barack Obama have "a lot on our plates right now." As Gates puts it, "let's push that one down the road a little bit."
The White House has said Obama has begun consulting with Gates and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on how to lift the ban. Gates says that dialogue has not really progressed very far at this point in the administration.
The Pentagon policy was put in place after President Bill Clinton tried to lift the ban on gay service members in 1993.
The policy refers to the military practice of not asking recruits their sexual orientation. In turn, service members are banned from saying they are gay or bisexual, engaging in homosexual activity or trying to marry a member of the same sex.
Gates appeared on "Fox News Sunday."

Diners can 'have a ball' at testicle festival
Will pay $50 apiece for the privilege of eating private parts of bulls

OAKDALE, Calif. - The fundraising idea may seem a little nuts, but Oakdale's annual Testicle Festival is always a big hit.

On Monday, volunteers with the town's Rotary Club plan to fry up 400 pounds of the private parts of bulls and serve them to diners who pay $50 apiece for the sit-down meal.

The event, whose proceeds also benefit the Oakland Cowboy Museum, has drawn an average of 450 people and last year raised $28,000.

It's common practice on cattle ranches for young male bovines to be castrated into steers, which after the initial loss, eventually makes them more docile and easier to handle. Fans of the delicacy, also referred to as "mountain oysters," come from around the state.

According to Rotarians, everyone who buys a ticket is guaranteed to "have a ball."

Mass. college closes after virus sickens 100
Symptoms suggest norovirus; classes canceled until Wednesday

WELLESLEY, Mass. - A Massachusetts college is shutting down for several days after 100 students and staff were sickened by a virus that causes a type of stomach flu.

Students and faculty have been afflicted with severe nausea and vomiting at Babson College in Wellesley, just southwest of Boston.

State Department of Health spokesman Tom Lyons says the norovirus is "miserable" but isn't life threatening. He says most people get better after a few days.

The college has about 3,400 undergraduate and graduate students. It's expected to be closed until at least Wednesday while campus buildings are cleaned.

Students are allowed to remain in their dorms, but classes and athletic events are canceled.

The college also advised students to remain on campus and avoid engaging in group activities to limit the spread of the virus.

School officials say they don't know the source of the virus, which often is spread by handling food. But Lyons says town health inspectors don't believe this outbreak is food related.

Universal loopholes and Lighted Mechanical Lupines

Good Morning Guys and Dolls!!
Its has of course been an inexcusable long time since our last installment so let us not waste any time and dive directly into the chaos that is our wonderful world.

Remote-controlled pill
Pharmacists use various mechanisms to control the release of drugs from a pill. For example, the pill may have a coating that is designed to be dissolved in a particular part of the digestive tract or after a certain amount of time.
But this does not always work since the rate of passage through the body can vary, and some individuals have higher levels of digestive enzymes than others. So the electronics company Philips has come up with a remote-controlled pill with a cavity for carrying a drug which can be opened by a remote signal......(read more)

Hmm....is that a candy Orwellian coating?

Sound Byte from Saturn captured by Cassini literally made my room sound like a krell laboratory. I half expect to find Robby the robot living happy and well on the surface of Titan.

Staying with the space and time theme a second I ran across this one....Surfer dude stuns physicists with theory of everything

An impoverished surfer has drawn up a new theory of the universe, seen by some as the Holy Grail of physics, which has received rave reviews from scientists.
Garrett Lisi, 39, has a doctorate but no university affiliation and spends most of the year surfing in Hawaii, where he has also been a hiking guide and bridge builder (when he slept in a jungle yurt).
In winter, he heads to the mountains near Lake Tahoe, Nevada, where he snowboards. "Being poor sucks," Lisi says. "It's hard to figure out the secrets of the universe when you're trying to figure out where you and your girlfriend are going to sleep next month."

Despite this unusual career path, his proposal is remarkable because, by the arcane standards of particle physics, it does not require highly complex mathematics.

Even better, it does not require more than one dimension of time and three of space, when some rival theories need ten or even more spatial dimensions and other bizarre concepts. And it may even be possible to test his theory, which predicts a host of new particles, perhaps even using the new Large Hadron Collider atom smasher that will go into action near Geneva next year......(read more)

Of course I will reserve comment until a particle is found. There are more and more models of the universe I have seen. some are nice like surfer dudes......some are scary.

More, heavier vehicles take toll on U.S. roads
WASHINGTON - Just like Americans themselves, the nation’s roads and bridges are carrying much more weight today.
Added to an aging and deteriorating highway system, that means more safety problems, delays and repair costs for drivers, experts said.
In just a decade, from 1995 to 2005, the weight load on urban highways increased by half. Since 1970, the weight carried on rural highways has gone up nearly 7½ times, according to Federal Highway Administration statistics.............(read more)

"just like Americans themselves........."..........Christ!.......so I am supposed to think that fat asses and suvs contributed to this collapse?..........on this note I have noticed just in my area in MD that just about every bridge and overpass all of a sudden has men working on it.......strange you say?......na.........just every city and county official from here to Anchorage doesnt want his or her name on the next collapsed bridge......makes me feel safe and fuzzy while i sit in traffic.

Beheaded rattlesnake sends man to hospital
PROSSER, Wash. - Turns out, even beheaded rattlesnakes can be dangerous.
That’s what 53-year-old Danny Anderson learned as he was feeding his horses Monday night, when a 5-foot rattler slithered onto his central Washington property, about 50 miles southeast of Yakima.
Anderson and his 27-year-old son, Benjamin, pinned the snake with an irrigation pipe and cut off its head with a shovel. A few more strikes to the head left it sitting under a pickup truck.
“When I reached down to pick up the head, it raised around and did a back flip almost, and bit my finger,” Anderson said. “I had to shake my hand real hard to get it to let loose.”.........(read more)

.........read that again and insert the voice of Hank from "king of the hill"............and how about you and your boy could have just left the snake alone......I'm sure it wasn't after you......poor thing was probably lost.....too bad it found you.

Mother jailed for girl's murder
Sharon Wright, 23, and 22-year-old Peter McKenzie-Seaton were both given life terms for killing Leticia Wright and each will serve at least 23 years.
Leticia had 100 separate injuries when she died and the judge at Bradford Crown Court said she had suffered "deliberate and grotesque cruelty".
She was found dying in her Almondbury Bank home in November last year. ......(read more)

every day I read something like this.....when do you think we will learn enough about violence to stop it?......looking at that little girl's beautiful innocent face makes me want it to be tomorrow.

City Horse-Drawn Produce Vendor Stable Condemned
One of the city's few remaining stables for horses that pull Arabber wagons was condemned by city officials, who told the produce vendors they must vacate the building by Thursday afternoon.
Arabbers have been a part of Baltimore street life for decades, peddling produce and seafood on horse-drawn carriages. However, less than a dozen arabbers work the streets of Baltimore today.....................(read more)
